NotifyMe - Frequently Asked Questions

When correctly implemented, Apple's Push notification system is very reliable. The reliability can be compared to SMS text messages. Everywhere where your iPhone has a cellular signal, it most probably also has a GPRS signal available, which is far enough for NotifyMe. However, Push technology is new and Apple is also upgrading it further. Some issues might appear for some users, therefore we provide useful tips for NotifyMe in this FAQ.

Features & Suggestions

1. What's this all about? I don't understand what's NotifyMe for. Why Push?

NotifyMe is the most simple reminder available on the App Store. It's the fastest way to set a reminder on your iPhone, also suitable for using while walking or driving a car. Big buttons, inputs and simple UI make creating reminders hassle free. At this moment, Push is the only available technology (besides SMS messages) to send alerts to your iPhone. If Apple provides new (local) solutions later, NotifyMe will be the first to adopt it.

2. I have a lot of feature suggestions, NotifyMe needs many more features!

We are very thankful for all feature suggestions to make our applications even better. However, we would like to politely explain that NotifyMe is very simple on purpose. NotifyMe should not completely replace your other task management applications, but rather complement them. NotifyMe is intentionally simple, just for adding simple reminders, so your Calendar or separate task manager won’t become bloated. Professional task management features are not planned, since we would like to keep the user interface very minimalistic. However, some useful tweaks and features are planned for future versions, check the next question.

3. Are there any planned features for NotifyMe?

You can always check what features are planned on our App Store page for NotifyMe in the description.

Useful tips

1. Migrating from NotifyMe Free to NotifyMe (full)

Your user account created on the first startup of NotifyMe Free is a fully featured account — you can continue using it in the full paid version of NotifyMe. All of your reminders from the Free version will be automatically synchronized to your paid version of NotifyMe. We recommend to remove NotifyMe Free completely from your iPhone & iTunes afterwards.

2. Setting correct time on your iPhone

Reminders are delivered according to our server time, which is synchronized daily with internet atom clock (time.nist.gov). Please set your time precisely on your iPhone.

3. Preventing battery power draining

Some users report unusual battery power draining after updating to firmware 3.0 and using Push based applications. This is a bug on the Apple's side -- resetting your network settings usually fixes the issue. Please go to iPhone Settings -> General -> Reset -> and tap "Reset Network Settings".

4. Understanding how Badges works

Badges should always show the number of received items - like Apple's "Messages" (SMS/MMS) and "Mail" application do. The number is representing the alert that you've probably missed something and you are encouraged to check it out. This is the correct implementation of Badges. Therefore, NotifyMe badge number represents how many reminders you've received since last launch. It does not represent the number of upcoming reminders.

5. Receiving reminders while iPhone is locked

When you receive a reminder while your iPhone is locked, the display backlight turns on automatically and the slider is suggesting "Slide to view". You can either slide to launch NotifyMe in the reminder editation mode, or you can press the top iPhone button to lock it and ignore the reminder. You can also press the Home button afterwards and you'll be able to unlock the screen without launching NotifyMe. This is the current iPhone OS 3.0 notifications implementation and it's not changeable.

Issues & Problems

1. I have problems with NotifyMe, what should I try first?

Make sure the time is set correctly on your iPhone. Also check Settings -> General -> Date & Time and set your actual time zone. It's very important to use the correct time zone for your country.

Most issues can be solved using the Airplane mode in iPhone Settings. Enable Airplane mode for at least 10 seconds and then disable it again. Your network will be refreshed and the connection to APNS service will be reinitialized. Try to set a new reminder in NotifyMe and test it. Make sure "Push service" is enabled in the Settings section of NotifyMe (when issues occur, sometimes it disables itself automatically if the user puts too much stress on the service during initial testing).

2. NotifyMe is starting up too long or it does not start, I can't create my user account, I don't receive reminders at all or only some of them, NotifyMe is crashing.

Problems mentioned are caused by unofficial device modifications, such as carrier unlocks and jailbreaks. While jailbreaks should not break the Push functionality, make sure your jailbreak does not contain any carrier unlocks. These unlocks cause a lot of problems with Push technology. Unfortunately, we can't support any unofficially modificated iPhones or iPods, since Apple does not support them as well. We recommend to try NotifyMe Free first on your iPhone for testing. Restoring your device to the factory settings is always the best way to get rid of all unsupported modifications. While some Push applications may work correctly on a modified device, NotifyMe may not due to certain Push checks for higher reliability. In any case, Push may not be reliable on unlocked or jailbreaked devices.

3. My iPhone is not jailbroken or unlocked in any way, but I don't receive any reminders.

Please refer to question #1. When trying to solve problems, don't use a WiFi connection. 3G, EDGE or GPRS is prefered for detecting problems. Make sure your network is not blocked by any firewalls or proxies and try to find out from your carrier's technical support if they block any particular ports on the network. If other Push based applications work for you and you keep experiencing problems with NotifyMe after trying the Airplane trick without success, let us know via the Support page.

4. I've tried everything from the above and nothing helped! What should I do?

Please get in touch with us using our Support page and provide as much as details possible so we can try to solve your problem. Thank you.

5. Why are my reminders delayed for 5 - 20 minutes?

If you are using iPod touch, you will not receive your reminders on time when iPod is locked or asleep. Due to Apple's limitations, iPod touch disables WiFi connections when asleep to preserve battery power and checks for new Push notifications in 15 minutes intervals only. We recommend to use NotifyMe only with the iPhone, iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS. If you don't use iPod touch and you've received one of your reminders a little later, it's possible that the device was not reachable at the target time so APNS service tried to send the notification to you later. This ussually occurs when changing networks. Better later than never!

6. I think I've found a bug in NotifyMe, what should I do?

Please report it as soon as possible using our Support page so we can help you and fix the bug in next update.
